Gay August-10-09

Pat and Roger picked us up at 9:30 am and we headed to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. We were there three years ago but wanted to do the Bath Iron Works tour. At 11:00 am we attended a talk on the old ship yards. Then at 12:30 pm it was time for our tour of the Bath Iron Works where they build Navy ships (no pictures allowed). We boarded a trolley which took us through the ship yard and showed us the different stages of ship building. It takes four years to build a ship before it can be turned over to the Navy. The Navy takes another two years for shake down and changes before it leaves the ship yard and is assigned to a Navy port. It was a very interesting day. For more information on the Bath Iron Works go to http://www.gdbiw.com/ after the tour we headed downtown to the Kennebec Tavern for lunch. It is located on the Kennebec River, so we sat outside to eat. Then back to the museum to for more history on ship building. We finally left at 5:00 pm as the museum was closing for the day. On the way home we stopped for pie at a restaurant in Richmond. When we got home we played a couple of games of Five Crown which Pat and Roger each won a game. It was a great day to spend with friends.
